jose's fame miss turkey trot -- famous turkey trot. we are in san jose in the middle of everything and i'm looking over your shoulder, this is one of the biggest thanksgiving day races in the country. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, and the costume contest is about to get underway. you can see there's some great costumes. there's indiana jones, we have super mario brothers, a robot. and even pacman, and it's going to be a lot of fun, judging is about to start, but in the next 45 minutes, the first race will begin. now, this is video of last year's turkey trot. it's the second largest race of its kind on thanksgiving day. a majority are participating in the 5 and 10 k. organizers have extended the deadline until 8:00 a.m., and we started seeing a lot more people starting to show up, and getting warmed up to race. >> i feel it's cool, like it's intimidated, but the fact that there are so many people you don't know, it's encouraging you to -- >> are you excited about burning calories? >> yeah, yeah. more excited about eating afterwards. >> reporter: all the registration funds raised

the first strike within the 77-year-old company. >>> a san jose family looking for answers after their loved one was shot and killed by palm springs police. he was a young marine and he was just back home from afghanistan. nbc bay area's jean elly has more. >> reporter: the american flag stands in front of the home today. the family is driving to palm strings to learn why the police shot and killed the marine. it happened in a downtown parking garage. police on bikes went to check out loud voices inside the lot. officers say they recognized the marine and his friend from an earlier run in with them, a drunken public incident. they ordered him to stop his car and when he drove off with one officer hanging out of the passenger side window and hit another officer, he fired. >> they made the statements from the officers involved and the evidence at the scene. we will have a better determination of what occurred and what led them to use their weapons. >> reporter: his friend was not hurt. police say they found a stolen phone and atm card in the car. he recently returned from a tour in afghanistan

-old jonathan wilbanks of san jose. they say he and a second suspect went on a crime spree friday night allegedly robbing four businesses within two hours. after those robberies, police say the two shot a man at a 7-eleven and tried to carjack him. that man ended up dying at that scene. san jose police were able to arrest wilbanks during a shootout with officers. the second suspect did get away. >> anybody who's willing to take part in four armed robberies and shooting at police officer, basically trying to kill one of our cops, is as dangerous as it gets administrator wilbanks was hit during the shootout and one of the police officers suffered minor injuries. police will hold a press conference at city hall along with mayor chuck reed and other city officials to update this investigation. >>> right now let's check things outside. >> we've got something to be thankful for around here, jon kelley. we've got rain on the way but it will subside by turkey day. 66 in fremont at that and 66 in redwood city. no showers in the forecast until tonight up in the north bay. that arrives at about 8:
